Overview

This guide walks through the essential steps to get your Trezor device working — from unboxing and verifying device integrity to creating a secure backup and conducting your first transactions. Follow each step carefully and never skip the verification and backup phases: your recovery seed is the only way to restore access to your funds if the device is lost or damaged.

Before you begin

Use only official sources and the cable included with your device. If you were sent a different cable, package, or a device that seems tampered with, do not proceed. Always go to the official start page for downloads and instructions.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Unbox & inspect: Check the seal and box for signs of tampering. The device should power up cleanly and display a welcome screen.
  2. Go to the official start page: On a trusted computer, open the official start page to download the official suite and firmware. Use the link in the Quick Links below or type the address manually to avoid typos.
  3. Install Trezor Suite (or use web.app): The Suite guides firmware installation and initial device configuration. Follow on-screen prompts — do not connect unknown USB sticks or install software from third-party pages.
  4. Update firmware: If prompted, update your device firmware. Firmware updates include security fixes; only apply updates from the official Suite or the official web start page.
  5. Create a PIN: Choose a strong PIN; avoid simple sequences. The device protects your PIN entry against remote observers.
  6. Write down your recovery seed: The Suite will show your recovery words on the device screen. Write them on the supplied card (or a secure metal backup) in the correct order and store them offline in a safe place.
  7. Verify your seed backup: Use the check option in the Suite to confirm you recorded the seed correctly. Never store your seed in cloud drives or photos.
  8. Receive funds: Generate a receiving address on your Trezor-controlled account, confirm the address on the device display, then send a small test amount first.
  9. Send funds: Create a transaction in the Suite, verify addresses and amounts on the device before approving. Always double-check before signing.
  10. Ongoing security: Keep firmware up to date, beware of phishing, and never disclose your recovery seed to anyone or enter it into a website.

Final security checklist

  • Never share your recovery seed. Keep multiple offline copies in secure locations if needed.
  • Verify every address on the Trezor device screen before approving transactions.
  • Use official downloads only and bookmark the official start page.
  • Consider using a metal backup for extreme protection against fire/water damage.
